The Leads"Anybody falls below a certain mark I'm not permitted to give them the premium leads" (Mamet 10).
The premium leads are assigned to the top salesman while the others get the old leads. The leads symbolize success and failure as the successful salesman stays successful as he gets the premium leads and the failing salesman stays a failure as he gets old leads. |
Jerry Graff"MOSS: To say 'I'm going on my own.' 'Cause what you do, George, let me tell you what you do: you find yourself in thrall to someone else. And we enslave ourselves. To please. To win some fucking toaster" (Mamet 20).
Jerry Graff symbolizes freedom. Because he is on his own, he is his own boss, makes his own rules, and pushes himself to sell. The other guys, however, are enslaved to Mitch and Murray as they have to please their bosses or else fear getting fired. |
Closing"I got to close this fucker or I don't eat lunch" (Mamet 16).
Closing is of utmost importance to the salesmen and symbolizes money. If the salesmen do not close, they do not make money, but if they do close, then they do make money. Closing means life or death as not closing could mean no food whereas closing could mean an abundance of food. |
